Children’s Festival

Below is the schedule for the 2010 festival. The 2011 schedule will be forthcoming.


The High Street lawns of Longwood University, normally populated by college students, will soon become a playground for children of all ages during the Heart of Virginia Festival. On the morning of Saturday, May 1, the front steps of the Lancaster Building and the Chichester Science Building and Brock Common's lawn will be the performance site for a variety of musicians and other entertainers.

The featured act this year will be Cody and BJ, returning to sing and dance and invite audience members to play in the band. Cody and BJ’s captive-bred macaw parrot, Cheyenne, may join them to teach everyone through song and dance the plight of her friends that live in the South American Rainforest. Like the legendary Pied Piper, Cody and BJ have a magical effect on children, but unlike the Piper, they don’t do rats.

Coming to the stage a family favorite, Hip-Pop comedian ventriloquist entertainer “Uncle Ty-Rone” is a masterful entertainer who arrives with a warm smile, a sincere drive to entertain and motivate audiences to succeed, and a BOX FULL OF FUN! He also brings with him lots of positive energy. He is a prime example of what can be accomplished when you challenge your imagination and turn your dreams into reality. You will also met the stars of his show, Raggz the so real dog, Baby T-Rex the cute and cuddly Ty-Ronasaurus Rex dinosaur, Jelly-Bean The orangutan ladies man, and lets not forget Ty-Rone’s 5 years old grown folk son Ty-J who has all the answers. Come on out and lets have a good time with comedian Uncle Ty-Rone and A Box Full of Fun!

ONE AMBITION

A homegrown band, One Ambition, formerly 5 Second Rule, will present a lively performance in front of the Lancaster Building. This unique band plays mostly original numbers with a few covers and praise songs thrown in. Members of the band are Bruce Willke, Karl Willke, Jake Allen and Jon Mills. They are always a big hit with the crowd!

CAROUSEL PUPPETS

This puppet show brings you variety under the big top, featuring large and colorful marionettes performing to a wide range of music.  The performance opens with a demonstration of how marionettes work and then it's on with the show!  You'll see juggling clowns, a ballerina, a cat on a trapeze, and many more circus acts to delight and enthrall all ages.  There's lots of audience participation, too!

DEJA MOO

Returning again this year is will be bring us all down home with their versions of classic and original bluegrass/country/gospel tunes. They have previously performed at our festival on the Weynoke Lawn much to the delight of audiences of all ages. Prepare to stomp your feet, clap your hands to this lively group.

Surrender 1

SURRENDER

The mellow southern rock sounds of Surrender is a show that shouldn't be missed.  They are brand new to the Children's Festival and play everything from country to Lynard Skynyrd.  Also look out for their original songs like Blow Your Mind.

Teddy Spaghetti, a clown who specializes in balloon art and juggling. Teddy's favorite trick is to balance on his chin any object the audience may supply that is bigger than a foot. Teddy will be wandering the Children's Festival site so keep an eye out for him.

SPIRAL

Simply one of the greatest hoop artists in the world, she's performed at festivals and arenas for enormous crowds.  These are not your parents' hula hoops….a mesmerizing, hypnotic, acrobatic phenomenon, featured at the Colonnade area in the morning, the Children's area in the afternoon and the Airport stage Saturday night.

Rob Westcott the Magician

robwestcottAn exciting new act is coming to the Heart of Virginia – Rob Westcott the Magician will appear at 10 AM. Rob is an award-winning comedy magician and family entertainer. Rob is bringing a couple of special friends with him; Chico the Amazing Mind-Reading monkey puppet. Also, Prince Charming the beautiful live bunny will magically appear! See a child from the audience float in the air! This is an act you don’t want to miss. Every child receives a tiny magic trick!


 

CHILDREN'S ART WORKSHOP

Lancaster Lawn 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

This year at the Heart of Virginia, kids can stop by the LCVA’s booth to make wearable art out of recyclables!  Kids will turn colorful magazine scraps into beads for necklaces, mixing in bottle caps, aluminum can tabs, and assorted wires, papers, and trinkets from the LCVA’s stash of goodies.  You’ll also see kids wearing fanciful hats and crowns, hand-crafted from newspapers and then decorated.
Finally, kids can make and take colorful corsages and bright bouquets,  made from paper towel rolls and tissue paper scraps.   Each person who visits the booth will also receive a coupon redeemable for a free box of crayons at the LCVA on May 1.  Reduce, reuse, and create!
